Dikgacoi explains the tactical errors that cost Bafana in World Cup opener

Bafana Bafana in action against Mexico

Former Bafana Bafana midfielder Kagisho Dikgacoi has explained the tactical mistake committed by Hugo Broos in South Africa’s 2-0 defeat against Mexico in the 2026 FIFA World Cup opener

Bafana Bafana endured a dismal start to their World Cup campaign at the Estadio Azteca on Thursday, producing a performance that left fans frustrated by some of the tactical and refereeing decisions during the match.

The 1996 AFCON champions approached the match against Mexico with a reinforced defence of five players in the back line and three defensively-minded midfielders.

Bafana’s game plan played right into Mexico’s hands after allowing the tournament co-hosts too much space on the ball. El Tri took full advantage, finding the back of the net as early as the ninth minute when Julián Quiñones pounced on a defensive error. Raúl Jiménez then sealed the victory in the second half, capitalising on South Africa’s defensive frailties to secure all three points for the home side.

To compound Bafana’s woes, Themba Zwane and Sphephelo Sithole were both shown straight red cards after the break, ruling the duo out of the next match through suspension.

Speaking after the match, Dikgacoi, who was part of the 2010 Bafana World Cup squad, admitted that Hugo Broos’ tactics on the day put several players at a disadvantage.

“I think we had a decent start; the first 10 minutes, we looked like we would settle into the game as soon as possible. But the tactical approach, especially offensively, wasn’t going to be suitable for the starting line-up we had,” Dikgacoi told FARPost at the Castle Lager watch party in Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

“We made a lot of technical mistakes, especially in our half, but I think in terms of the effort, the boys really tried. In terms of the game plan, I think we were a bit lost in every department.

“Some of the players, I think, were misplaced. At the back, when you look at [Mbekezeli] Mbokazi, you play him as a lateral centre-back, and he’s more comfortable in the central position. Even [Nkosinathi] Sibisi playing him as a lateral centre-back, it was always going to give us problems, especially when we build from the back.”
