Why Jimmy Jambo backs Scottland as key test for Chiefs ahead of new season

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Zhaimu 'Jimmy' Jambo

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Zhaimu ‘Jimmy’ Jambo has hailed Zimbabwean PSL champions Scottland FC as ideal opponents for Amakhosi in the 2026 Toyota Cup.

The Soweto giants clash with Scottland in the third edition of this pre-season competition at Royal Bafokeng Stadium on July 26. Tanzanian giants Young Africans were the inaugural Toyota Cup guests, facing Amakhosi in Bloemfontein.

Asante Kotoko then graced this fixture in 2025, with the clash staged at Moses Mbhida Stadium. Now, Scottland are headed to Rustenburg as they prepare for next season’s CAF Champions League.

They will be up against Chiefs, who will be returning to the CAF Confederation Cup, where they reached the group stage last term. After finishing third in the Betway Premiership last season, Chiefs are also eying the league title they last clinched in 2015.

Having opted to play Scottland in the Toyota Cup, which also serves as a crucial pre-season match, there has been scrutiny on Amakhosi’s choice of opponents. The Zimbabwean champions have been in existence for only three years.

But they have been making waves for their high-profile signings, including the ex-Chiefs duo Knowledge Musona and Khama Billiat. Also in Scottland books is former Free State Stars goalkeeper Talbert Shumba, ex-Orlando Pirates striker Terrence Dzvukamanja and Walter Musona, formerly of Polokwane City FC.

JAMBO ENDORSES SCOTTLAND FC AS FITTING TOYOTA CUP OPPONENTS FOR KAIZER CHIEFS

Jambo, who hails from Zimbabwe, has justified why Scottland are the perfect opponents for the Glamour Boys, mainly noting how they have changed the football landscape in their home country.

“I think it’s going to be a great game altogether, knowing the momentum that Scottland have and also the experience they have in former Chiefs players Khama Billiat and Knowledge Musona,” said Jambo, speaking to the media at the launch of the Totoya Cup in Naturena most recently.

“They also have former PSL players in [Terrence] Dzvukamanja and all these players. The coach Norman Mapeza also has an understanding of PSL football.

“It’s going to be a good game altogether for football. Knowing Kaizer Chiefs, how they finished the season last season and coming into next season, I think they have a good base. We are going to have a good game.

“I’m hoping that at the end of the day, it will unite the Zimbabweans. One thing that I want to say regarding having Scottland coming in is that, lately, Zimbabwean football has been going down. But now they have come into the fold. You can now see how the supporters are back in stadiums. There is a lot of noise coming from the Zimbabwean side regarding Zimbabwean football.”
