Broos points to Messi incident as SAFA prepares to appeal Themba Zwane’s FIFA ban

Bafana Bafana star Themba Zwane versus Mexico

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has confirmed that SAFA will appeal a three-match ban handed to midfielder Themba Zwane by FIFA, questioning why global superstar Lionel Messi escaped similar punishment for a recent incident.

Zwane was slapped with the three-match suspension following a straight red card during Bafana Bafana’s opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against co-hosts Mexico.

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee confirmed the sanction on Wednesday after reviewing the incident from South Africa’s 2-0 defeat at the iconic Azteca Stadium on June 11. Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio dismissed the veteran playmaker after he made contact with the face of Mexico’s Roberto Alvarado with a raised arm while attempting to spin past the defender.

However, FIFA noted that the decision remains subject to appeal before the FIFA Appeal Committee, a window that SAFA is moving swiftly to exploit.

HUGO BROOS COMPARES ZWANE’S DISMISSAL TO LIONEL MESSI INCIDENT

Speaking ahead of Bafana Bafana’s crucial second Group match against Czechia at the Atlanta Stadium on Thursday [18:00], a frustrated Broos confirmed the appeal and pointed out a glaring double standard in refereeing at the tournament.

The Belgian tactician referenced an incident during Wednesday’s World Cup clash between Argentina and Algeria, where Lionel Messi escaped any discipline for a dangerous challenge on Aissa Mandi. Replays showed Messi catching Mandi from behind with a late challenge on the defender’s calf, yet the incident didn’t even prompt a VAR review.

“I don’t think it was a red card [for Zwane]. And when I saw what happened yesterday with Messi, I don’t agree [with the ban], certainly not,” Broos told the media.

“I think there was not even a VAR review on Messi. When you look at our situation, the Mexican player blocked my player. He was holding Themba, and Themba tried to break free and put his arm over his shoulder. That’s all he did; he didn’t mean to foul him. He gets a red card for that, and now a three-game suspension?”

BAFANA BAFANA MENTOR SLAMS ‘TOO SEVERE’ PUNISHMENT

Broos insisted that taking the 36-year-old maestro out of the group stages completely is an overly harsh penalty that could derail South Africa’s World Cup campaign.

“This is too severe. Again, I don’t want Messi to get a red card because we all know what kind of a player he is,” Broos added. “But I am a little bit frustrated. Certainly, a three-match suspension is too much.

“Our situation now is clear. If we lose tomorrow, we play the last game against South Korea for nothing. This is something we have to avoid.”

Bafana Bafana face Czechia tonight in a must-win encounter as they look to keep their knockout stage dreams alive without their midfield talisman.
