Bafana Bafana captain Themba Zwane has been handed a three-match suspension by FIFA following his red card in Bafana Bafana’s opening 2026 FIFA World Cup match against hosts Mexico. The FIFA Disciplinary Committee confirmed the sanction on Wednesday after reviewing the incident that led to Zwane’s dismissal during South Africa’s 2-0 defeat to Mexico at Mexico City Stadium on 11 June.
In a statement, FIFA said: “The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has imposed the following sanction on South Africa’s player Themba Zwane who was sent off as a result of a direct red card during the FIFA World Cup 2026 match between Mexico and South Africa played at Mexico City Stadium on 11 June 2026: 3-match suspension for breach under article 14 paragraph 1 e) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.”
FIFA further noted that the decision remains subject to appeal before the FIFA Appeal Committee. The suspension is a significant blow for Bafana, who are already under pressure after losing their opening Group A fixture against the tournament hosts.
THEMBA ZWANE’S WORLD COULD BE OVER

Zwane will now miss the remaining group-stage matches against Czechia and South Korea. Bafana take on Czechia on Thursday in Atlanta before concluding their group stage campaign against South Korea in Monterrey, Mexico. Should Bafana progress to the knockout stages, the Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder would also be unavailable for the Round of 32 clash.
The 36-year-old playmaker was shown a straight red card during the defeat to Mexico, leaving South Africa to finish the match with nine men. Sphephelo Sithole had also been sent off earlier in the second half.
Head coach Hugo Broos now faces the challenge of reshuffling his midfield ahead of Thursday’s crucial encounter, a match Bafana must avoid losing to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds alive.
With two of the team’s most experienced players sidelined, the spotlight will fall on the likes of Jayden Adams, Teboho Mokoena, Relebohile Mofokeng and Thalente Mbatha to provide leadership and creativity in the middle of the park.
The sanction also means Zwane’s World Cup campaign could be over unless Bafana advances beyond the Round of 32.
