Scottland boss confirms talks with Kaizer Chiefs over player deals

Scottland FC president Scott Sakupwanya has dropped a major hint that there could be player movements between the Zimbabwean moneybags and Kaizer Chiefs ahead of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season.

Over a week ago, Kaizer Chiefs confirmed they will face Scottland FC in the third edition of the Toyota Cup on 26 July at Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg.

The announcement came after Chiefs Football Manager Bobby Motaung was spotted at the National Sports Stadium watching Scottland beat title contenders CAPS United 2-0, with Knowledge Musona on the scoresheet.

Motaung was back in the stands on Sunday as Scottland defeated another contender, Hardrock FC, by the same margin, Musona again scoring a brace.

His repeated appearances in Harare have sparked speculation that he is on a scouting mission for the Betway Premiership giants. And now, Sakupwanya has revealed what the two clubs are planning.

‘WE ARE NEGOTIATING WITH KAIZER CHIEFS’ – SCOTT SAKUPWANYA

Sakupwanya did not reveal major details but confirmed talks are underway with Amakhosi. He was speaking on the latest Scottland FC podcast.

“Fans should expect more players to come in. We’re not done yet. We have already completed the signing of Nickson Nyasulu from FC Platinum, and he’s a quality addition to our squad,” Sakupwanya said.

“But that’s just the start. I am currently in talks with many clubs, both locally and abroad, for players and other transactions. As we speak, I am engaging Kaizer Chiefs about possible player movements between the two clubs.”

“We are also speaking to players who are based in Europe. Our goal is to bring the best talent to Scottland FC and build a team that can compete at the highest level.”

BOBBY MOTAUNG’S ZIMBABWE TRACK RECORD

This is not Motaung’s first mission to Zimbabwe. In 2009, he personally tracked and signed Knowledge Musona from Aces Youth Soccer Academy.

Motaung travelled to Harare to monitor the then-young forward before bringing the ‘Smiling Assassin’ to Naturena in August 2009. Musona went on to forge a successful career at Amakhosi and remains revered in the Betway Premiership.

Kaizer Chiefs have a long history with Zimbabwean stars. Tinashe Nengomasha, Willard Katsande, Khama Billiat and Musona all became club legends.

Other players who wore the gold and black jersey include Lincoln Zvasiya, Kingston Nkhatha, Ovidy Karuru and Matthew Rusike. Billiat was the last Zimbabwean to play for Chiefs, leaving at the end of the 2022/23 season.

BIG REWARDS FOR BILLIAT, MUSONA AND CREW

Sakupwanya has also been impressed by how his team has fared this season. He revealed that his players will receive R164,000 [US$10,000] each after finishing top of the Castle Lager PSL table at the halfway mark.

Sakupwanya had initially promised the squad R82,000 [US$5,000] for leading the log after 17 matches, but doubled the bonus following Sunday’s 2-0 win over title rivals Hardrock FC at Rufaro Stadium, where Motaung was in attendance.

The result means Scottland FC remain top regardless of the outcome of Hardrock FC’s unresolved case against Dynamos. With 37 points from 18 matches, Scottland are five points clear of Hardrock, who have a game in hand.

“You have to pay players so that they stay happy. I promised them US$5,000 and I have put it up to US$10,000. They are working, they need to feed their families. We don’t want them to go to South Africa. They must stay in Zimbabwe,” Sakupwanya said. Hopes are high that they will make a mark in their first ever appearance in the CAF Champions League, the 2026/27 edition.
