Sipho Mbule with Orlando Pirates

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Sipho Mbule has joined Iraqi top division side Zakho SC following his departure from the Buccaneers at the end of last season.

Mbule became a free agent after the Buccaneers decided against triggering a two-year option on his contract.

The highly-rated midfielder left Pirates having been with the club for only one season after signing with the club on a free transfer in July 2025.

Mbule arrived at Mayfair on a free transfer after parting ways with Mamelodi Sundowns upon the expiry of his contract at Chloorkop.

The former SuperSport United star had a bright start to life at Pirates, winning the hearts of the Bucs faithfuls with his exquisite technical abilities, passing range and goal scoring capabilities.

In his first six months at Pirates, Mbule was a regular in the starting line-up, playing a major role in the Ghosts clinching the MTN8 and the Carling Knockout Cup titles.

SIPHO MBULE FINDS NEW HOME IN IRAQ

As a result of gloomy performances, Mbule earned recognition from national team selectors after forming part of the Bafana squad that sealed a qualification to the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

Mbule was also part of the Bafana squad that participated in the 2025 AFCON in Morocco where South Africa were eliminated in the Last 16 of the competition.

After the Nations Cup, the 28-year-old lost his positions in the Pirates matchday squad, resulting in his ultimate exit from the Soweto giants.

With the fan-favourite searching for a new chapter, FARPost has learnt that Mbule has signed with Zakho SC to start a new journey outside of South Africa borders.

Mbule will be looking to revive his career in Iraq after facing challenges in the PSL which saw him play for Mamelodi Sundowns, Sekhukhune United and Pirates and less than two years, signaling lack of stability in his career.
