Tunisian Ligue 1 side US Monastir FC have appointed former Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Romain Folz as their new head coach, marking a staggering 14th job in just six years for the 36-year-old tactician.

The experienced tactician has found a new home in Tunisia after eight months without a club since his departure from Tanzanian giants Young Africans. US Monastir announced his appointment as head coach on Monday, marking his first managerial job in the North African country.

The nomadic Frenchman is, however, not new to North Africa, having previously worked in Algeria as Olympique Akbou sporting director. He also once had a stint as Pyramids FC assistant coach.

Since 2020, Folz has been involved in 14 jobs, including various roles at clubs, the Mauritania national team, and a performance manager role at the world football governing body, FIFA. He has also worked at Guinean side Horoya AC, Township Rollers FC in Botswana, Ashanti Gold FC and Bechem United in Ghana, Chamois Niort in his home country and also as the Uganda national team assistant coach to Sebastien Desabre.

Introducing himself to South African football when he arrived to coach Marumo Gallants FC in July 2022, Folz’s stint at Bahlabane ba Ntwa was, however, short, as he lasted two months and took charge of just six games.

His spell at AmaZulu FC was also largely unsuccessful, but he made a surprise return to the Betway Premiership when he was named assistant coach to Manqoba Mngqithi at Mamelodi Sundowns.

He has now resurfaced in Tunisia to lead US Monastir, who finished fifth in Ligue 1 last season. He is in North Africa where clubs are known to be impatient with coaches.

“French football coach Romain Folz is the head coach of US Monastir’s senior team,” US Monastir announced his appointment.

“Romain has previously worked on the coaching staff of Tanzanian side Young Africans, South African club Mamelodi Sundowns, Guinean club Horoya AC, and Egyptian club Pyramids FC.”
