South African winger Luther Singh has opened up about the challenges he encountered with Cypriot First Division side AEL Limassol last season.

The 28-year-old moved to Cyprus in July 2024 following a stint with Serbian outfit FK Čukarički. His current contract with AEL Limassol is set to run until May 2027.

The Stars of Africa Academy graduate enjoyed an impressive 2025/26 campaign, establishing himself as a key figure for the Cypriot side. He featured in 31 matches across all competitions, netting nine goals and chipping in with seven assists.

AEL Limassol finished the 2025/26 Cypriot First Division season in 8th place overall, securing 2nd place in Relegation Playoff Group B.

After a strong showing in Cyprus, Singh was a notable omission from Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana squad ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. South Africa’s journey at the World Cup ended on Sunday, 28 June, when they suffered a 1-0 defeat to the co-hosts Canada in the Round of 32 at Los Angeles Stadium.

LUTHER SINGH ON AEL LIMASSOL’S CONSISTENCY ISSUES

In an exclusive interview with FARPost, the Singh preferred to address the collective struggles rather than his individual challenges, emphasising that the club’s objectives always come first.

“I think there were challenges that we faced. I’m only going to speak about the team because I’m playing the sport, and there’s no ‘I’ in the team. It’s about us because the team is bigger than any individual,” Singh told FARPost.

“I feel we encountered some challenges throughout the season. If we had been more consistent, we would have accomplished something big. There were periods when we were winning a lot of games and performing very well, but we ended up dropping our performance and losing some games.”

LUTHER SINGH LOOKING AHEAD TO THE NEW CAMPAIGN

Singh admitted that while it was disappointing not to achieve their targets last term, the unpredictable nature of football keeps the squad motivated to bounce back stronger.

“But this is football. This is why everyone is so in love with this game: because you can never predict what will happen, and some things are out of our control,” Singh added.

“We had a great opportunity to do something amazing this year, and at the same time, we had goals we wanted to achieve. Unfortunately, we couldn’t, but we are looking forward to the new season and what we can accomplish then.”
