Betway Premiership side Sekhukhune United have parted ways with Bafana Bafana international Renaldo Leaner following the non-renewal of his contract.
The 28-year-old shot-stopper officially becomes a free agent ahead of the new campaign, ending his stay with Babina Noko, whom he joined in July 2023 from Maritzburg United [now known as Durban City FC].
Leaner enjoyed a decent run in the starting line-up this past campaign, having had a healthy battle for the number one spot alongside fellow international teammates Toaster Nsabata of Zambia and Equatorial Guinea’s Manuel Sapunga.
Last season, the talented goalkeeper made 23 appearances across all competitions for the Limpopo-based outfit, keeping 10 clean sheets.
His consistent performances between the sticks subsequently earned him a call-up to the South African senior national team. Leaner was part of Hugo Broos’ final 23-man squad for the back-to-back international friendlies against Panama, which was part of their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

SEKHUKHUNE UNITED OFFICIAL STATEMENT ON RENALDO LEANER’S DEPARTURE
The club confirmed the player’s departure on Thursday night via an official press statement, expressing gratitude for his professionalism:
“Sekhukhune United Football Club confirms the departure of goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner following a non-renewal of his contract,” reads the club’s statement released on Thursday night.
“Renaldo joined Babina Noko ahead of the 2023/24 season and served the club with distinction throughout his time with us. His performances and professionalism were rewarded with a call-up to the South African senior national team, a testament to his dedication and quality.
“The club extends its sincere gratitude for his commitment and contribution. We thank you, Renaldo.”
SOWETO GIANTS CIRCLING FOR LEANER’S SIGNATURE?
As previously established by FARPost in April, Orlando Pirates are understood to be highly keen on securing the services of the free-agent goalkeeper.
The Buccaneers will, however, face stiff competition as Leaner has also previously been linked with cross-town rivals Kaizer Chiefs.
Meanwhile, Leaner is not the only high-profile exit at the club. The Limpopo side has also cut ties with assistant coach Andre Arendse.
Arendse follows a growing list of departures from the Babina Noko technical team, joining assistant coach Marc van Heerden and performance analyst Kyle Solomon.
