Motsepe Foundation Championship side Cape Town City FC have made a major statement ahead of the 2026/27 season by completing the signing of experienced midfielder Thabang Monare.
The Citizens confirmed the acquisition of the former Sekhukhune United and Orlando Pirates midfielder on Sunday morning, securing his services as a free agent.
Monare parted ways with Babina Noko ahead of the new campaign. The 36-year-old had joined Sekhukhune in July 2024 from Soweto giants – Pirates.
During the 2025/26 season, Monare was a heavily relied-upon figure, making 32 appearances across all competitions, while also netting two goals.
Monare’s departure from Sekhukhune comes amidst a heavy mass exodus at the club. The seasoned midfielder headlines a long list of high-profile veterans and squad regulars who have recently cut ties with the Limpopo side.
The list of departures from Sekhukhune includes Bradley Grobler, Renaldo Leaner, Lesiba Nku, Lebogang Phiri, Ronaldo Maarman, Siphiwe Mahlangu, Samkele Sihlali, Sikhosonke Langa, Katlego Mohamme, Ryan Baartman, and Rivaldo Coetzee.

CAPE TOWN CITY FC’S OFFICIAL STATEMENT ON THABANG MONARE’S ACQUISITION

Monare becomes the club’s third official signing of the current transfer window. The Cape side has already beefed up their defensive department with the acquisitions of Parsley Fielies and Bolivian international Marcelo Suárez.

Furthermore, the club’s star attacker, Jaedin Rhodes, has completed a European move to the Austrian Bundesliga outfit SV Ried.
