Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Melusi Buthelezi has bid farewell to the Soweto giants following his unexpected departure from the Betway Premiership champions.
The Buccaneers confirmed the departure of Buthelezi on Friday afternoon. The 28-year-old’s exit brings down the curtain on a three-year spell with the Sea Robbers.
Buthelezi’s surprising departure comes shortly after Pirates triggered an option to extend his contract for the upcoming season. Despite his sudden exit, he had firmly established himself as the club’s second-choice goalkeeper, providing reliable backup to Sipho Chaine.
The KwaZulu-Natal-born shot-stopper joined Pirates on 1 July 2023 ahead of the 2023/24 campaign from TS Galaxy.
During his three-year marriage with the ‘Happy People’, Buthelezi managed to make 22 appearances across all competitions. He kept 12 clean sheets and conceded 14 goals during his time between the sticks.
Furthermore, Buthelezi was part of a successful Buccaneers squad that clinched an impressive six domestic titles, including the Betway Premiership, three MTN8 cups, a Nedbank Cup, and a Carling Knockout Cup.
‘ONCE AND ALWAYS’ – BUTHELEZI PENS HEARTFELT GOODBYE
Taking to his official Instagram account on Saturday, the goal-minder expressed his gratitude to the club’s management, technical team, and the fans.

“To the Orlando Pirates family, it’s never easy to say goodbye to a place that has shaped you in so many ways,” Buthelezi wrote.
“I want to thank everyone at Orlando Pirates for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to wear this badge. It has truly been an honour. Thank you to the coaches, management, technical team, my teammates, and the supporters who stood by me throughout my journey.”
Reflecting on the highs and lows of his stint in the black and white colours, the former Galaxy man admitted that his time in Soweto tested his character but ultimately aided his growth.
“This journey wasn’t always easy. There were good days, difficult days, moments of joy, and moments that tested me. Through it all, I grew not only as a footballer but also as a person. Every challenge taught me something, and every great moment made me stronger.
“To the supporters, thank you for your love, your patience, and your encouragement. Your support never went unnoticed, and I will always carry it with me.
“As I begin a new chapter, I leave with nothing but gratitude, beautiful memories, and friendships that will last a lifetime. Orlando Pirates will always have a special place in my heart. Thank you for everything. Once and Always,” he concluded.
