Stellenbosch FC CEO Rob Benadie has shed light on why the club decided to sign experienced midfielder Tlakusani Mthethwa ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
Stellies confirmed the acquisition of the 33-year-old on Saturday, 11 July 2026. He joins the club on a long-term deal as a free agent, as it was previously reported by FARPost.
Mthethwa has been without a club after parting ways with the KwaZulu-Natal outfit Richards Bay FC. This comes after his contract with the club officially expired on June 30, 2026.
The Natal Rich Boyz decided against offering the veteran midfielder a new deal after two seasons with the team. Mthethwa joined the club in July 2024 from the now-defunct Moroka Swallows, who sold their Betway Premiership status to Marumo Gallants.
During his stint at Richards Bay, Mthethwa made 50 appearances across all competitions for the side and found the back of the net once.

The Cape Winelands-based outfit expressed its delight at having secured the services of the talented midfielder.
“Stellenbosch FC is delighted to announce the signing of midfielder Tlakusani Mthethwa on a free transfer,” reads the club’s statement.
“Mthethwa, who most recently captained Richards Bay FC, has joined Stellenbosch FC on a long-term contract ahead of the 2026/27 season.
“The 33-year-old also previously played for Moroka Swallows and boasts more than 100 career Betway Premiership appearances to his name.”

Benadie expressed his delight at signing Mthethwa. He stated that the player’s experience will be vital in taking the club to greater heights.
“We are pleased to welcome Tlakusani to Stellenbosch. We believe he brings a valuable blend of quality, leadership, and experience to our squad,” said Benadie.
“His character and professionalism align with the culture we have built at the club. We are confident he will make a positive contribution.”
Mthethwa becomes Stellenbosch FC’s third signing of the current transfer window, following the arrivals of Sinoxolo Kwayiba from Chippa United and Thabiso Lebitso from Orlando Pirates.
