Stellenbosch FC chief executive officer Rob Benadie has outlined why the club settled for New Zealander Nathan Garrow as they seek to reinforce their goalkeeping ranks.
The 21-year-old Cape Town-born shot-stopper has signed what the club says is “a long-term contract” from Auckland City FC. The Maroons went thin in their goalkeeping unit following the retirement of Lee Langeveldt and the departure of Oscarine Masuluke.
Another 21-year-old Kiwi, Dublin Boon, is an Orlando Pirates target, leaving Stellenbosch desperate to bolster their goalkeeping options.
Garrow arrives at Stellenbosch armed with some experience that could make him a reliable understudy of captain Sage Stephens. He was solid between the sticks at the 2025 FIFA World Cup when Auckland City faced Portuguese heavyweights SL Benfica and Boca Juniors from Argentina.
Also giving him experience is participation in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup and the Oceania Football Confederation Champions League. Born in Cape Town, Garrow is eligible to play for Bafana Bafana and at 21, he could be seen as a future national team prospect.

He is a talented young goalkeeper with outstanding potential, and his performances over the past year have demonstrated that he has the quality to succeed at a high level,” Benadie was quoted as saying on the club website when Garrow was unveiled.
“He has an incredibly bright future ahead of him, and we believe that he will benefit from the opportunities for growth that exist at the Club, while simultaneously helping to improve our goalkeeping department.”
CAPE TOWN CITY FC SIGN MORE PLAYERS
Meanwhile, Cape Town City FC continue with their shopping spree with the arrival of midfielder Thabang Rakwena from Motsepe Foundation Championship side Casric Stars. The 29-year-old has previously played Betway Premiership football with TS Galaxy.
He joins other new Cape Town City signings like veteran midfielder Thabang Monare, Bolivian centre-back Marcelo Suarez and Parsley Fielies. FARPost understands that Congolese defender Nathan Fasika has also been signed by the Citizens.
