Former Baroka FC defender Mlungisi Mkhwanazi has been spotted at Motsepe Foundation Championship side Lerumo Lions FC as he looks to make a return to South African football.
The 27-year-old centre-back was recently in the books of Namibian top-flight outfit Young African FC. He joined them in September last year on a free transfer. The defender had signed a one-year deal with the Namibian club.
He moved to Namibia following his departure from Kruger United, who were still competing in the National First Division [NFD] prior to earning promotion to the Betway Premiership for the 2026/27 season as league champions.
In the last term, the Stars of Africa Academy graduate helped Young African finish in position 12 with 33 points from 30 outings.
MLUNGISI MKHWANAZI TRAINING WITH LERUMO LIONS FC
FARPost can confirm that Mkhwanazi is currently being assessed by the Sibongile Marokana-owned side, as they aim to bolster their defensive department ahead of the upcoming season.
The ‘Beast’, as he is affectionately known within football circles, boasts extensive international and domestic experience. Beyond his stint in Namibia, Mkhwanazi has played in Europe, featuring for Finnish professional outfits IFK Mariehamn and Tampereen Ilves-Kissat. He also had stints with Polish sides Pogon Swiebodzin and Odra Bytom Odrzanski.
On the local front, the former Bakgaga defender has also represented teams such as Casric Stars FC and the now-defunct Cape Town All Stars.
Lerumo Lions are looking to build on their decent debut campaign in the Motsepe Foundation Championship. The North West-based side secured its second-tier status by acquiring the franchise of Pretoria Callies. This was prior to the start of last season.
Lerumo finished their debut professional season in seventh place on the log standings. They managed to accumulate 42 points from their 30 league outings.
It is now up to Mkhwanazi to impress the Lerumo technical team and secure a permanent home with the North West side.
