Football agent Gary Cassisa has addressed reports linking Tshegofatso Mabasa with a possible move to Pyramids FC, revealing a hurdle to a transfer to the Egyptian side.
Mabasa is currently looking for the next chapter after becoming a free transfer following the expiry of his contract at Orlando Pirates.
The goal poacher is free to join any club of his choice ahead of the 2026/27 season. Mabasa will be eager to return to competitive football and continue showcasing his goal-scoring qualities. He parted ways with the Buccaneers just shy of breaking the club’s all-time scoring record, currently held by Benedict ‘Tso’ Vilakazi, who netted 58 goals for Pirates.
The striker went out the exit door at Pirates, having scored 50 goals, leaving Vilakazi’s record intact. Mabasa was released at the Soweto giants after falling out of favour under head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou last season.
The Moroccan coach took over the coaching job at the start of the previous season and preferred Evidence Makgopa and Yanela Mbuthuma in the striking positions. As a result of falling down the pecking order, Mabasa went out on loan to Stellenbosch FC in January 2026 to search for game time, and he scored four goals in 14 appearances for the club.
Upon the expiry of his loan deal at Stellies, Pirates also opted against offering Mabasa a new deal, allowing him to walk away as a free agent.
With the 29-year-old itching for his next move, recent reports have linked Mabasa with Pyramids FC, where he could reunite with his former Pirates coach Rulani Mokwena, who was recently appointed at the helm.

His agent, Cassisa, revealed that there is nothing formal regarding a potential move to North Africa, while noting that the foreign quota could prove to be a major stumbling block. Egyptian Premier League rules prohibit clubs from registering more than six foreign players, and Pyramids currently have seven on their books.
As it stands, the 2024/25 CAF Champions League winners have Walid El Karti, Mohamed Chibi, Odeh Fakhoury, Samuel Amusan, Ewerton, Pascal Phiri and Hamed Hamdan from Palestine, who’s registered as a local.
“Look for Tshegofatso Mabasa; nothing formal, just interest, you know,” Cassisa told FARPost. “The problem is that in Egypt, clubs only have no more than six foreigners and at the moment they [ Pyramids]have filled their foreign quota.
“And they are going on a pre-season, so that means they will only be back in Egypt around August, which might be a bit too long for Mabasa to wait for them to decide; he needs to get back to playing football.”
