Orlando Pirates have shown interest in signing Stellenbosch FC midfielder Thapelo Mokobodi as the club looks to further strengthen its squad ahead of the new season, FARPost has established.
The 23-year-old central midfielder was one of the key figures for the Cape Winelands-based outfit during the 2025/26 campaign. He featured in 28 games across all competitions, having been with Stellies since August 2025.
Mokobodi joined the Gavin Hunt-led side from Betway Premiership side Marumo Gallants.
His satisfying displays in Bahlabane Ba Ntwa colours caught the eye of the Stellenbosch hierarchy. He was an important player for Gallants during the 2024/25 campaign, making 24 appearances in all competitions.
ORLANDO PIRATES KEEN TO SIGN THAPELO MOKOBODI
FARPost has learnt that the Buccaneers are keen to acquire the services of Mokobodi ahead of a demanding 2026/27 season. The club will be competing on multiple fronts, including the Betway Premiership, MTN8, Carling Knockout Cup, Nedbank Cup, and the CAF Champions League.
However, negotiations are still in the preliminary phase as the Sea Robbers attempt to reach an agreement with Stellenbosch.
So far, Pirates have already secured several additions to their squad, signing Ghampani Lungu, Mthetheleli Mthiyane, Sbangani Zulu, Bohlale Ngwato, Neo Rapoo, Aphiwe Baliti, and Matome Mmolai.
In addition, the Soweto giants have parted ways with players like Bandile Shandu, Sipho Mbule, Tshegofatso Mabasa, Karim Kimvuidi, Deivi Miguel Vieira [Gilberto], Thabiso Lebitso, Thabiso Sesane, Selaelo Rasebotja, Siyabonga Ndlozi, Gomolemo Khoto, Sonwabo Khumalo, Blessing Ngiba, Seth Green, and Melusi Buthelezi.
If it happens that Mokobodi joins Pirates, he will be in competition with players such as Thalente Mbatha, Makhehlene Makhaula, Masindi Nemtajela, Abdoulaye Mariko, and Sihle Nduli in the central position.
Meanwhile, Pirates will be aiming to build on the momentum from last season, where they achieved an impressive domestic treble by lifting the Betway Premiership title, MTN8 trophy, and Carling Knockout Cup.
