Kaizer Chiefs first-choice goalkeeper Brandon Petersen has warmly welcomed the signing of Renaldo Leaner, who arrived at the club to challenge for the number one spot ahead of the new 2026/27 season.
Petersen addressed the media at the Naturena Village on Friday as Amakhosi finalised their preparations to face Zimbabwean side Scottland FC in the Toyota Cup at Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Phokeng on Sunday afternoon.
The high-profile exhibition match gives new head coach Fernando Da Cruz an ideal opportunity to assess the squad’s readiness for the upcoming campaign while integrating their latest recruits.
KAIZER CHIEFS’ CAUTIOUS TRANSFER WINDOW STRATEGY
Chiefs have taken a measured approach in the transfer market so far, adding just three new players to their ranks. The Soweto giants have secured centre-back Thabo Moloisane, central midfielder Adolf Mtasingwa Bitegeko, and former Sekhukhune United shot-stopper Leaner.
All three arrivals are expected to play crucial roles as Amakhosi gear up to compete on multiple fronts in the upcoming season, chasing four domestic trophies alongside the CAF Confederation Cup.

Leaner’s arrival adds extra depth to a competitive goalkeeping department. Under the new Da Cruz era, Petersen, Leaner, Bruce Bvuma, Takalani Mazhamba, and Bontle Molefe will all be vying for a place between the posts.
Reflecting on Leaner’s arrival and their shared history, Petersen highlighted the healthy competition the former Sekhukhune stopper brings to Chiefs.
“I think he [Leaner] is a good signing for the team,” Petersen said. “I’ve known Renaldo since we were very young—I was his head boy in high school, and we’ve always had a good relationship.
“It’s great to see how he grew as a goalkeeper from Ajax Cape Town and how he fought his way into the PSL. It’s a great opportunity for him, and for us in the goalkeeping department, it’s good competition. I don’t mind competition; we can push each other. So it’s exciting times ahead.”
