Former Kaizer Chiefs stalwarts Itumeleng Khune and Mandla Masango have thrown their weight behind Amakhosi’s pursuit of Stellenbosch FC star Langelihle Phili, with Khune comparing the attacker to legendary fan favourite Jabu Mahlangu.
The highly-rated winger has firmly placed himself on the radar of Chiefs, with the club determined to beef up their squad depth as they prepare to battle on four domestic fronts in addition to the CAF Confederation Cup in the 2026/27 campaign.
Chiefs are hunting for a quality winger with a proven record of delivering at the highest level, especially with Glody Lilepo closing in on an exit to join Libyan side Al Ahly Benghazi, as previously reported by FARPost.
The Congolese international has been a crucial component of the Glamour Boys’ attack over the past season and a half, largely due to his knack for getting onto the scoresheet. During the previous campaign, Lilepo registered 37 appearances in all competitions, returning nine goals and four assists.
With Lilepo now edging closer to the exit door, Chiefs are actively in discussions with the Winelands-based outfit to secure the services of the versatile SA youth international. Yet, Chiefs’ chase for Phili has been anything but smooth sailing, given that Stellenbosch FC have attached a massive R16 million price tag to the attacker, who boasts 11 goals and two assists across 72 appearances.
MASANGO AND KHUNE BACK CHIEFS CHASE FOR LANGELIHLE PHILI
Although talks to bring Phili to Naturena have temporarily hit a snag over Stellenbosch’s firm financial demands, Masango and Khune remain convinced that the winger would be a fine acquisition for the Soweto giants if the transaction gets across the line.
“Phili is a great player. I really like him a lot; he’s got goals in him, and I think he could be a good addition to the team,” said Masango.
Khune echoed Masango’s sentiment on Phili, stating that the youngster’s qualities remind him of Jabu Mahlangu.
“Langelihle Phili reminds me of Jabu Mahlangu; he’s that type of player who is not scared of taking on defenders using his natural ability. One-on-one, he will take you to the cleaners,” Khune added his voice.
“He also reminds me of Kgaogelo Sekgota—a player who never asked for permission to take someone on and deliver a good cross. Kaizer Chiefs have always been known to produce great wingers, and Langelihle Phili fits the profile of former wingers like Junior Khanye and Jabu Mahlangu.
“I wish him all the best. Let him come to Kaizer Chiefs and write his name in the history books. He’s such a great talent, and I know he will succeed at the club.”
