SA businessman Ally Kgomongwe has acquired the Premier League status of Amawele FC ahead of the 2026/27 Eswatini season, it has emerged.
Amawele FC finished 13th in the 2025/26 MTN Premier League, and Kgomongwe’s arrival is expected to change the Msunduza-based club’s fortunes this season.
The club was previously owned and directed by Thando Shabangu. He stepped down less than a week ago due to financial challenges, paving the way for Kgomongwe to take over.
Kgomongwe is a renowned entrepreneur and football administrator. He has a proven record in Eswatini, having spent five seasons at the helm of Mbabane Highlanders between 2019 and 2024. Kgomongwe also held a five-year management contract with Botswana club Extension Gunners, parting ways with the club last season.
ALLY KGOMONGWE BRINGS NEW HOPE TO AMAWELE FC
With Shauwn Mkhize at the helm of Mbabane Highlanders AM and Kgomongwe now owning Amawele FC, the Eswatini Premier League will have two clubs owned by South Africans in the 2026/27 campaign.
It also remains to be seen if Amawele FC will be renamed to align with Kgomongwe. Ironically, Kgomongwe is the one who transferred ownership of Mbabane Highlanders to ‘MaMkhize’.
The club began last season under its new name, Mbabane Highlanders AM, after being rebranded in line with MaMkhize’s former club, Royal AM. The ‘AM’ honours her son Andile Mpisane, who served as chairman and player of the former KZN outfit.
Mbabane Highlanders AM will be targeting the league title this season. However, they have parted ways with Selaotse ‘Sly’ Mosala, who guided the club to a fifth-place finish in the 2025/26 season. They replaced him with another SA coach, Floyd Mogale.
Kgomongwe will also be hoping to make an immediate impact and challenge for Eswatini Premier League honours in his new chapter at the helm of Amawele FC.
