Retired winger Mahlatse Makudubela has explained what makes Romain Folz stand out as a coach, following the duo’s reunion at Tunisian side US Monastir.
Makudubela recently joined US Monastir as a performance and video analyst, where he will be working under the club’s newly appointed head coach, Folz.
‘Skudu’, as he is affectionately known, previously worked under the French tactician during their short stint at Betway Premiership outfit Marumo Gallants back in 2022.
The 36-year-old’s transition into performance analysis came shortly after he announced his retirement from professional football on Thursday, 16 July. The decision brought down the curtain on a playing career that spanned nearly two decades across both domestic and international stages.
During his playing days, Makudubela featured for top South African clubs, including Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates, Platinum Stars, Chippa United, Highlands Park, AmaTuks, Marumo Gallants, and Siwelele FC.
Abroad, the skilful winger turned out for FK Karviná [Czech Republic], FC Gagra [Georgia], Young Africans SC [Tanzania], AS Vita Club [DR Congo], and Wiliete FC [Angola].
MAHLATSE MAKUDUBELA ON ROMAIN FOLZ’S COACHING QUALITIES
Speaking to FARPost, Makudubela opened up about his respect for Folz’s tactical decisions and why he believes the Frenchman is one of the top coaches.
“Well, look, I think it was evident enough when Sundowns brought him on board. It tells you that he’s a very brilliant coach. You know, even coach Manqoba Mngqithi can attest to that. The guy does his job phenomenally,” Makudubela told FARPost.
“What a great coach he is and what he can do. Not to mention his qualifications. He won a trophy [Community Shield] in Tanzania with Young Africans, you know. His work stands out, and it speaks for itself.
“He has been one of the coaches that, when I worked with him at Marumo Gallants, we had a short stint, but I could see the type of work he does, especially his coaching techniques, methods, and game model—very special.”
