Mamelodi Sundowns will begin their 2026/27 domestic campaign without key striker Brayan León when they lock horns with Polokwane City FC in an MTN8 quarter-final clash on Saturday, 8 August.
The showdown between Bafana Ba Style and Rise and Shine is scheduled for a 18:00 kick-off at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville.
The Brazilians head into the encounter as firm favourites, seeking to build on a continental campaign that saw them clinch the CAF Champions League title.
However, Sundowns endured an underwhelming domestic run after failing to defend their league crown—ending a dominant eight-year title streak—while also coming up empty-handed in knockout competitions like the MTN8, Nedbank Cup and Carling Knockout.
As a result, Miguel Cardoso’s side will be eager to set the record straight and improve on the domestic front.
Their task, however, is made all the more challenging as the Portuguese tactician will have to navigate the season opener without main frontman Brayan León.
WHY BRAYAN LEÓN WON’T FEATURE FOR SUNDOWNS
Masandawana will be forced to take to the pitch without the gifted Colombian frontman due to a one-match suspension carried over from the end of last season.
León picked up his fourth yellow card of the campaign during Sundowns’ final Betway Premiership fixture against TS Galaxy at Mbombela Stadium on 12 May 2026. The 3-2 defeat in Mpumalanga proved costly, as it saw Sundowns narrowly miss out on the league title after an unprecedented run of eight consecutive titles.
As a result of the yellow card suspensions being carried over into the new domestic season across PSL-sanctioned competitions, the 26-year-old must serve his mandatory suspension during Sundowns’ tie against PLK City on Saturday in the MTN8 quarter-final.
BRAYAN LEÓN’S IMPRESSIVE NUMBERS AT CHLOORKOP
The loss of León is a big blow for the Chloorkop-based club given his immediate impact since arriving in South Africa.
The forward joined Sundowns in January 2026 from Colombian top-flight outfit Independiente Medellín. Despite arriving mid-season and adjusting to the high expectations in Sundowns colours, León hit the ground running.
He finished the 2025/26 campaign with an impressive tally of 15 goals in just 26 appearances across all competitions.
With León sidelined, the Sundowns technical team will look to their upfront options to replace the Colombian striker in order to secure passage into the semi-finals of the top eight competition.
