Newly signed FC Copenhagen winger Thapelo Maseko has lifted the lid on a crucial conversation he had with club icon Sibusiso Zuma prior to finalising his high-profile move to Denmark.
Maseko officially completed a transfer to the Danish giants on a four-year contract, ending his spell with Mamelodi Sundowns. The 22-year-old was formally unveiled by Copenhagen on Tuesday, August 18, and will don the jersey number 12 for the 2026/27 campaign.
By joining Copenhagen, the explosive winger follows in the footsteps of South African predecessors like Luther Singh and, most notably, Zuma, who remains an enduring figure at the Parken Stadium. Zuma earned legendary status in Denmark after leading the club to the 2001 Danish Superliga title, sealed by an iconic, championship-winning bicycle kick against arch-rivals Brøndby IF.

Speaking during his official presentation on Tuesday, Maseko admitted that insights from Zuma played a major role in shaping his decision to head to Scandinavia.
“I am very proud of this agreement. It is a dream come true. To me, FC Copenhagen is a very special club,” Maseko told the club’s official website.
“They are a club that is highly recognised internationally. And Zuma has told me so many great things about the club, the fans, and the city. I am looking forward to experiencing it all myself. I am truly honoured to get this opportunity, and it fills me with hunger and ambition. And I have come here to make a difference and leave my mark on the club.”

The Bafana Bafana international made no secret of his desire to collect silverware in Europe while continuing his professional development under demanding conditions.
“I have big ambitions for the club and on a personal level. I came here to win. And I am very excited to get out on the pitch and give everything I’ve got,” Maseko added.
Meanwhile, FC Copenhagen head coach Bo Svensson expressed immense delight over securing the South African star’s signature. He highlighted his key attributes.
“In Thapelo, we get an explosive, dynamic player with exceptional qualities in direct, one-on-one situations,” Svensson explained. “His pace and ability to challenge his direct opponent will make him a constant threat in behind. He can also use his left foot to create chances when cutting inside.”
