Mamelodi Sundowns winger Abubeker Nasir has officially returned to his home country, Ethiopia, to join Mechal SC following a dismal spell with the Brazilians.
The highly-rated attacker initially joined the Tshwane giants in January 2022 before being loaned back to Ethiopian Coffee SC to finish the local season.
Nasir eventually reported to Sundowns in July that year to begin life in the Betway Premiership, arriving with immense hype following his stellar performances in Ethiopia.
Upon his arrival at Sundowns, Nasir produced dazzling performances, instantly winning the hearts of Masandawana fans. The skilled attacker introduced himself to South African football with one of the best solo-run goals against Kaizer Chiefs, as Downs won 4-0 at Loftus Versfeld in August 2022.
With excitement building around Nasir and the qualities he brings to Sundowns, he suffered an unfortunate knee injury during a clash against Orlando Pirates after colliding with the then-goalkeeper Siyabonga Mpontshane.
Following the freak injury at Sundowns, the 26-year-old struggled to return to full fitness and ultimately missed out on making the matchday squad.
As a result, Nasir was loaned out to SuperSport United in the 2024/25 season, but he couldn’t get the playing minutes he wanted. After a failed stint with Matsatsantsa, who have since sold their status to Siwelele FC, he had another loan spell in the Motsepe Foundation Championship with AmaTuks.

However, Nasir continued to struggle with injuries at the University of Pretoria, resulting in a limited contribution on the pitch in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
Following the continued challenges in South Africa, Nasir has eventually returned to Ethiopia to join Mechal SC on a free transfer.
The right-footed winger leaves Sundowns after featuring in 18 appearances across all competitions and scoring four goals.
