Former Orlando Pirates defender Deano Van Rooyen has bid an emotional farewell to the Buccaneers following his surprise departure a few days ago.
Van Rooyen surprisingly parted ways with Pirates last week, bringing to an end an eventful two-season spell with the Soweto giants.
The talented right-back initially joined Pirates as a marquee signing from Stellenbosch FC in August 2024 to play under the then-head coach Jose Riveiro.
Van Rooyen had a good start to life in his first season at Pirates, featuring regularly in the starting line-up before he started battling persistent injuries, among other things, that kept him out of the team.
Last season, Van Rooyen struggled for regular playing minutes under head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, who preferred Kamogelo Sebelebele in the right-back position.
In the current campaign, Ouaddou has continued to put his faith in Sebelebele in the starting lineup, prompting the exit of the 29-year-old, who left Pirates as a free agent.
Interestingly, Pirates opted to mutually part ways with Van Rooyen despite having Sebelebele as the only recognised right-back in the team. In the current transfer window, the Sea Robbers released Bandile Shandu, Thabiso Lebitso, Siyabonga Ndlozi and loaned out Tshepho Mashiloane, leaving the club thin at right wing-back.

After his surprise exit, Van Rooyen has waved goodbye to Orlando Pirates, pouring out his heart to his former teammates, coaches, management and the fans.
“To Orlando Pirates, I would like to express my gratitude towards the club for an incredible two years,” Van Rooyen said on his Instagram page on Monday.
“What an honour and privilege it has been to wear the colours and represent the team. I’m grateful for every opportunity, every challenge, lesson, and shared memories with each one of you.
“The past two years truly built me not only as a footballer but as a person. And I leave this club with a heart full of gratitude and memories that I’ll forever cherish.
“To my teammates, thank you for the brotherhood, the battles, and unforgettable moments on and off the pitch. To the coaches, technical team, management, and everyone behind the scenes, thank you for the guidance, the dedication, and support throughout my time here.
“And last but not least, my Orlando Pirates supporters, it has been a privilege to play in front of you and to be part of the Buccaneers family; thank you for the loyalty and unwavering support. I leave this club with nothing but respect, love, and a grateful heart.”
