South African Football Association [SAFA] CEO Lydia Monyepao was dramatically kicked out of a Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Sport, Arts and Culture meeting on Tuesday after stubbornly refusing to disclose former Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos’s salary.
The virtual parliamentary briefing, held on 25 August 2026, was convened for SAFA to update lawmakers on Bafana Bafana’s performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and present an official report on the recent visa debacle that delayed the team’s travel to Mexico.
The session was attended by committee members, Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie, and several SAFA National Executive Committee [NEC] officials alongside Monyepao. SAFA president Danny Jordaan was absent after submitting a formal apology, indicating he was consulting a doctor.
The question of Broos’s remuneration quickly took centre stage when Economic Freedom Fighters [EFF] Member of Parliament Eugene Mthethwa pressed Monyepao for exact figures regarding the Belgian tactician’s earnings during his five-year tenure.

Monyepao remained adamant that she would not disclose the confidential details to the committee. Despite Chairperson Joe McGluwa reading the Riot Act and reminding the CEO of parliamentary oversight authority, Monyepao maintained her refusal and was ultimately booted out of the virtual platform.
Following Monyepao’s exit, Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie stepped in to reveal the figures directly to the committee. McKenzie disclosed that Broos earned a massive R1.4 million per month, totalling R16.8 million annually.
Furthermore, the meeting laid bare the ongoing financial negotiations regarding incoming head coach Pitso Mosimane. It was revealed that SAFA initially offered the former Al Ahly boss R5 million annually, a figure the NEC later drastically revised to R10 million a year as the association looks to secure his services.

The public spat in Parliament comes at an exceptionally delicate moment for the mother body. While the NEC officially approved the three-time CAF Champions League winner’s appointment on August 8, an official announcement remains stalled.
Negotiations are reportedly hung up on salary demands, image rights, and the composition of Mosimane’s technical team ahead of next month’s crucial 2027 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] qualifiers.
