Kaizer Chiefs defender Dillan Solomons has opened up about the stiff competition at right-back, amid ongoing scrutiny over Amakhosi’s squad depth in different positions.
The Soweto giants have been building a squad to challenge for the Betway Premiership title, CAF Confederation Cup, Carling Knockout and the Nedbank Cup. They are already out of the MTN8 after being knocked out by Golden Arrows FC at the first hurdle.
Among Chiefs’ new signings, there was no new right-back as coach Fernando da Cruz appears content with the material he has on the right side of the defence. The new acquisitions include goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner, centre-back Thabo Moloisane and defensive midfielder Adolf Mtasingwa Bitegeko.
Wingers Langelihle Phili and Stellenbosch FC loanee Faiz Abrahams have also been signed, while Khanyisa Mayo’s loan transfer from CR Belouizdad is now permanent. What could make Da Cruz satisfied with the right-back role is the options he has in Thabiso Monyane, Solomons and Reeve Frosler, who is being utilised at left-back this season.
Moloisane and another central defender, Zitha Kwinika, are also comfortable with playing on the right side of defence.
‘TOUGH BUT GOOD’: DILLAN SOLOMONS’ VERDICT ON CHIEFS’ RIGHT-BACK COMPETITION
In an interview with FARPost, Solomons shared his personal and club ambitions this season, while also taking time to discuss the competition at right-back. With Chiefs having played four games so far this campaign, the 29-year-old has made just two appearances—a brief cameo against Golden Arrows and a start against Sekhukhune United, where he chipped in with an assist.
“For me, it’s [season goal] obviously to play as much as I can. We have a good team, a lot of players can come in and do the job. Whenever I’m asked to do the job, that’s what I’m willing to do and help the team win more games than what we did last season,” Solomons told FARPost.
“It’s really tough [at right-back], but it’s good competition. We are very supportive of each other, and that’s key for us.
“We have been supportive of whoever gets his opportunity. He needs to take it. So, we are looking really solid in that position, and hopefully we can go out there and show people what we are about.
“Obviously that’s the goal to push further than what we did last season, and it has to be better every single day, and hopefully we will end up on top.”
