Betway Premiership newcomers Kruger United have completed the signing of promising centre-back Shaun Chawane to strengthen their defensive department for the 2026/27 season, FARPost has learnt.
The 24-year-old defender joins the Mpumalanga-based outfit from SAFA Limpopo ABC Motsepe League side Tzaneen United, where he established himself as a key figure in their backline.
During his spell with Tzaneen United, Chawane proved to be an asset at both ends of the pitch. He featured in 23 matches across all competitions, scoring six goals and providing three assists.
The centre-back also boasts valuable Motsepe Foundation Championship experience, having played for Jomo Cosmos during the 2021/22 National First Division [NFD] season. He remained with Cosmos when they suffered relegation to the South African third tier in the same campaign.
In addition to his spells at Tzaneen United and Cosmos, Chawane turned out for Liver Brothers in the Mpumalanga ABC Motsepe League, as well as Mamelodi Sundowns’ now-defunct feeder team, M Tigers, in the Gauteng ABC Motsepe League.
KRUGER UNITED LOOK TO FIX DEFENSIVE LEAKS
FARPost can reveal that Kruger opted to bring in Chawane on a permanent basis in a bid to address their defensive challenges. The deal was finalised on Saturday, 29 August 2026.
The top-flight debutants have endured a difficult start to life in the South African elite league. Kruger currently sit at the bottom of the Betway Premiership table in 16th place, having managed to collect one point from their opening four league matches.
The side has recorded three defeats and one draw, conceding seven goals while scoring only twice.
The club’s technical team will be hoping Chawane’s arrival brings much-needed stability and tactical discipline to the backline as they push to climb out of the relegation zone.
Kruger’s next league assignment will be against the defending champions Orlando Pirates at Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga on Tuesday, 1 September. The game is set to kick off at 19:30.
