Danny Jordaan has been re-elected SAFA president for a fourth term following an emphatic victory over Sandile Zungu at an elective congress in Midrand on Saturday.
The CEO of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Local Organising Committee garnered 157 votes to Zungu’s 82, securing a 65.7 per cent majority. The 75-vote margin mandates Jordaan another four years at the helm of the local football mother body.
Despite allegations of death threats, intimidation and electoral fraud headlining the run-up to the vote, the elections still went on. Casting votes were SAFA’s 52 regions, as well as the PSL as the special member and various associate members.
World football governing body FIFA, CAF, COSAFA, SASCOC, Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie and legends of the game were invited to observe the vote.
JORDAAN CLINGS ONTO SAFA REINS
The 75-year-old has been SAFA president since 2013 and has stated that this is his final term as the association’s president. His term has seen Bafana Bafana and Banyana Banyana reach the knockout stages of the FIFA Men’s and Women’s World Cups.
However, alleged financial irregularities have marked Jordaan’s time at the helm of the association. He has a fraud and theft case pending before the Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crimes Court. Jordaan is accused of misappropriating R1.3 million from the SAFA coffers and he denies any wrongdoing.
SANDILE ZUNGU’S HIGH HOPES FOR SA FOOTBALL DASHED
During a press conference on Monday, Zungu did not entertain any prospect of defeat as he presented a glowing manifesto highlighting his ambitions for South African football. It is still to be seen whether he will contest Saturday’s results.
