Durban City FC have secured safe passage to the second preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup following a 2-1 victory over Burundi’s Rukinzo FC on Sunday afternoon.
The result at the Stade Intwari in Bujumbura sealed a 3-1 aggregate win for the KwaZulu-Natal-based side.

1. DURBAN CITY FC CAME INTO THE ENCOUNTER WITH AN ADVANTAGE FROM FIRST LEG
Khalil Ben Youssef’s side travelled to Bujumbura holding a 1-0 advantage from the first leg played at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban last weekend. Knowing that a disciplined performance would see them through, the Citizens effectively managed the return fixture to complete the job away from home.
2. HISTORIC OUTING FOR DURBAN CITY FC
The trip to Burundi marked a significant milestone in Durban City’s history. It was the KZN outfit’s first-ever competitive fixture played outside South African borders, making their progression to the next round even sweeter.
3. KYLE JURGENS AND MASEKO SEAL THE WIN FOR DURBAN CITY FC
The Betway Premiership side caught the hosts cold, breaking the deadlock just one minute into the match. Samkelo Maseko delivered a precise cross, allowing Kyle Jurgens to head home the opener.
Maseko then turned scorer in the 37th minute to double the lead. The goal came off a slick combination between Jurgens and former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Gastón Sirino, putting the tie out of Rukinzo’s reach before the half-time break.
4. TELEVISION BLACKOUT FOR THE RUKINZO FC AND DURBAN CITY FC GAME
Supporters back home were left in the dark as the encounter was not broadcast on television. KZN faithful and local football enthusiasts were denied the chance to watch the historic victory live and had to rely solely on the club’s social media updates to follow the action.
