Betway Premiership side Durban City FC have decided against retaining Collins Nwoburuoke, with FARPost learning that the club and the centre-back have mutually parted ways after just one season together.
The Nigerian defender has departed Durban City following a mutual agreement to terminate his contract. Nwoburuoke struggled for game time at the reigning Nedbank Cup champions after joining ahead of the 2025/26 season.
In the previous campaign, the defender couldn’t hold a regular place in the starting berth under two different coaches, Gavin Hunt and Pitso Dladla.
The 21-year-old only managed to feature once for Durban City in their first season in the Premiership after gaining promotion from the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
In their return to the top-flight since rebranding from Maritzburg United to Durban City, the side won the 2026 Nedbank Cup and finished in the top eight on the league table. They are participating in the 2026 CAF Confederation Cup by virtue of winning the Nedbank.

With Durban City under the new leadership of former Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef, Nwoburuoke’s game-time situation didn’t change. As a result, the towering defender left the club on a free transfer.
Nwoburuoke’s agent Mike Makaab has confirmed his client’s exit from Durban City. Interestingly, the defender was on trial at Orlando Pirates before putting pen to paper with the Farook Kadodia-owned team.
“Collins Nwoburuoke is no longer at Durban City; the player and the club decided on a mutual agreement to terminate the contract,” Makaab told FARPost.
“As I said, it’s mutual; both parties are happy with the decision, and we are looking forward to what lies ahead”
It remains to be seen whether Nwoburuoke will remain within South African football or explore other opportunities across the African continent.
