Kruger United co-owners Basil Khoza and Bongani Wati are in talks over a deal that could see Khoza buy Wati’s stake in the Betway Premiership club, FARPost has learned.
The two Mpumalanga businessmen founded Kruger United in 2023, with Gauteng Provincial Government spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga as the third director.
However, Mhlanga’s role remains a mystery, with Khoza and Wati more visible in the club’s rapid rise through the divisions. Khoza serves as club president, providing strategic oversight, while Wati, as chairman, has been closely involved in daily operations.
Wati was more hands-on during last season’s promotion campaign but has been less active around the club over the past two months and has seldom been seen at matches. Sources say he wants to focus on his other business interests and move away from football.
WATI’S ROLE IN KRUGER UNITED’S RISE
Wati played an important part in Kruger’s Motsepe Foundation Championship triumph, which secured the club’s place in the top flight for the 2026/27 season. The Village Boys were established after acquiring Caroline FC’s status.
They won the Mpumalanga ABC Motsepe League in their first season and reached the national playoff final, earning promotion to the Championship.
Kruger finished fifth in their maiden Championship campaign in 2024/25 before clinching automatic promotion in their second season. A buyout would leave Khoza in sole control of the club just months into its first Premiership campaign.
In their maiden season in top-flight football, they have played seven games, winning one, drawing one and losing five. They are currently 12th in the league table.
Meanwhile, the club’s head coach, Abram Mongoya, will look to stabilise the ship after the break. The Mbombela-based side is currently two points ahead of Marumo Gallants, who are at the bottom of the table. They play Chippa United away after the FIFA International break on October 17, 2026.
