As Bafana Bafana prepare to kick off a brand new era at Orlando Amstel Arena in Soweto, returning head coach Pitso Mosimane has laid down an ultimatum regarding South Africa’s long-standing silverware record.
Mosimane was appointed as the coach of Bafana earlier this month, returning to the national team for his second stint after leading the side between 2010 and 2012.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns mentor took over the hot seat from Hugo Broos, who had been at the helm since 2021.
Under the Belgian coach, Bafana’s closest feat to winning a trophy came in 2023, when they finished third at AFCON in Ivory Coast.
Broos also made history by guiding Bafana to the first-ever knockout stage in the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Mexico, Canada and the USA.
However, Bafana last won a major trophy in 1996 when they clinched the Nations Cup under the leadership of late Clive Barker.

With Mosimane having a track record of winning trophies at club level, which includes three CAF Champions League titles, the experienced mentor is eyeing silverware to take Bafana to the next level.
“We should acknowledge and accept the work the previous coach has done. It has been a good five years,” said Mosimane. “But we have to win a cup, right? Let’s try to win a cup.”
Mosimane will officially kick off his second spell with Bafana against Guinea in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers in Orlando this Saturday afternoon. Kickoff is set for 15:00.
The former Al Ahly coach aims for a perfect start and maximum points to drive their AFCON qualification campaign for East Africa, building on back-to-back tournament appearances and a 2023 bronze medal.
