Eric Tinkler has revealed that an offer from a Betway Premiership club was the main reason he resigned as Asante Kotoko head coach, lending weight to reports that he is headed to Durban City FC.
FARPost reported that the former Sekhukhune United and Cape Town City FC coach is set to take charge of the Durban club.
Tinkler did not name his next destination when he addressed Kotoko’s players, but his account of why he left Ghana points to the move. The 2-0 defeat to Aduana FC at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday was his final match in charge.
Speaking to the squad afterwards, Tinkler insisted the result had played no part in his decision. He said he had decided to leave the previous week and agreed to stay for one more game.

“It had nothing to do with performance. It had nothing to do with the result yesterday,” he told the players. “This was a decision I had already made last week. Obviously, the chairman [James Osei Brown] and myself managed to keep that very quiet, and the request was that I stay until this game, which is exactly what happened.”
Tinkler then gave the clearest indication yet of what comes next. “I was given an offer to go back to a club in South Africa, and that is the main reason why I made the decision.”
The former Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United coach previously worked with Durban City’s owners during his time at Maritzburg United. With Durban City poised to appoint him, the admission all but confirms where Tinkler is headed, although the club has yet to announce his arrival.
The KZN outfit parted ways with Khalil Ben Youssef on Saturday after a slow start to the season. They amassed seven points from their opening seven league matches. This came after one win, four draws, and two losses.
Tinkler leaves Kotoko after four league matches, with one win, two draws and one defeat.
