Siyabonga ‘Sniper’ Mtombeni has signed for Durban City FC, ending his spell without a club following the collapse of his proposed move to Golden Arrows.
FARPost understands that the striker has secured a fresh opportunity in the Betway Premiership, completing his move outside the transfer window because he was a free agent.
The move brings an end to a difficult period for Mtombeni, whose anticipated switch from Upington City FC to Arrows failed to materialise ahead of the 2026/27 season.
Indications are that he has signed a short-term deal, keeping him at the club until the end of the season. City assistant coachMusa Nyatama knows him well from their time together at Upington City FC.
HOW MTOMBENI’S GOLDEN ARROWS MOVE FELL THROUGH
As FARPost previously reported, Upington released the 26-year-old to facilitate the transfer. He signed the contract Arrows presented, but the KwaZulu-Natal club did not countersign it, leaving the agreement incomplete.
Arrows had considered him as a replacement for Junior Dion, who ultimately stayed. Mtombeni was consequently left searching for another club after securing his clearance from Upington.
Durban City FC have now offered him a route into the top flight, with his free-agent status allowing the deal to proceed after the window closed.
Mtombeni previously caught City’s attention on the pitch, earning Man of the Match against them during Upington’s 2026 Nedbank Cup campaign, despite his side losing on penalties.
The Mhluzi-born forward previously featured for Jomo Cosmos, TS Sporting and Baroka FC. His game combines intelligent movement with the ability to link attacks and create space for teammates.
He will now look to establish himself at Durban City after an uncertain start to the season.
Meanwhile, the KZN side is expected to announce the arrival of new head coach Eric Tinkler. The former Sekhukhune United mentor recently left Ghana giants Asante Kotoko to take up the Durban City job. He is replacing Khalil Ben Youssef, who was dismissed after a slow start to the season.
