Jesús de Miguel dies after on-field collision as police launch investigation

Jesús de Miguel claps his hands

Spanish football has plunged into deep mourning following the tragic death of CD Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel Alameda, who died on Tuesday morning at the age of 30 after a horrifying on-field collision.

The incident occurred during Tenerife’s La Liga 2 fixture against FC Andorra at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López on Monday.

Deep into stoppage time in the 96th minute, with the match locked at 2-2, De Miguel chased a long ball into space near the centre circle. FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono rushed far out of his penalty area and leapt forward with his right knee raised, striking De Miguel violently in the chest.

Referee Manuel Ángel Pérez Hernández immediately showed Owono a straight red card for excessive force before abandoning the match in the 108th minute as emergency medical personnel desperately treated the motionless forward on the pitch.

DE MIGUEL’S ON-FIELD COLLISION AND EMERGENCY TRANSPORT

De Miguel suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest and lost consciousness immediately after the impact on the field. Paramedics restored his pulse in the ambulance before transferring him directly to Hospital Universitario de Nuestra Señora de Candelaria in Santa Cruz.

Tenerife initially issued a statement confirming that De Miguel was stable and breathing unassisted, though he remained in critical condition in intensive care. However, his neurological condition deteriorated rapidly around 05:00 on Tuesday morning, and he passed away at 08:00 without regaining consciousness.

In an emotional official statement, Tenerife expressed their devastation, describing the club as broken by pain, with a lump in their throats and unable to believe this is true, while offering their full solidarity to his family and loved ones. The Canary Islands outfit has declared six official days of mourning, suspending all sporting operations and opening their home stadium on Saturday evening so supporters can pay their respects.

HOMICIDE DIVISION OPENS JUDICIAL INQUIRY

The homicide division of the National Police has opened judicial proceedings to investigate possible involuntary manslaughter. Authorities in Santa Cruz de Tenerife confirmed that this is a standard procedure under Spanish law for any death resulting from non-natural causes.

José Luis Sánchez-Jáuregui, the chief public prosecutor in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, said it remains very difficult for criminal charges to proceed to trial, given that the impact occurred during the normal course of a match. Sentences for involuntary homicide under the Spanish legal code range from three months to four years of imprisonment, though there is no modern legal precedent of a professional footballer facing criminal prosecution for an in-game challenge.

Disciplinary authorities from the Royal Spanish Football Federation are reportedly set to review the referee’s match report, with Owono facing a potential 12-game suspension under federation regulations. Owono, visibly distressed after the collision, deactivated his social media accounts on Tuesday.

The Spanish football federation announced the postponement of all Tuesday fixtures in the Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina, while both Tenerife and FC Andorra have submitted formal requests to postpone their upcoming weekend league matches.
