‘I called my mother first’: Elias Mokwana on sealing ‘dream’ Kaizer Chiefs move

Elias Mokwana after signing with Kaizer Chiefs

Elias Mokwana’s first instinct upon completing his free transfer to Kaizer Chiefs was to call his mother—a fitting start to a chapter the winger feels was simply meant to be, as he opened up about the emotion of joining Amakhosi.

Mokwana completed his move to Chiefs this week, as first reported by FARPost, bringing an end to days of intense speculation surrounding his future.

The talented winger officially put pen to paper with the Soweto giants after parting ways with Tunisian powerhouse Espérance de Tunis. Amakhosi unveiled the 27-year-old on Wednesday to beef up head coach Fernando Da Cruz’s attacking options for the ongoing PSL campaign.

Mokwana brings a wealth of top-tier experience to Naturena, having featured in the CAF Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup with Espérance. He also represented Bafana Bafana at the previous Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Morocco.

WHAT MOKWANA SAID ABOUT JOINING KAIZER CHIEFS

Reflecting on his move to Naturena, Mokwana revealed that donning the Gold and Black jersey is the fulfilment of a lifelong passion, having backed the Soweto giants since childhood.

“I grew up supporting Amakhosi. I first heard that they had interest in me when I was at Sekhukhune. Instead of going to Esperance, I was supposed to come here, but unfortunately some obstacles prevented it from happening at the time,” said Mokwana.

The attacker went on to express his joy at sealing a move to the Soweto giants, describing how he instantly turned to his inner circle once the deal was wrapped up before setting his sights on silverware at Naturena.

“I was sitting with my sisters, and the first thing I did was phone my mother to share the good news with her. I can’t explain the feeling exactly. I’m excited. It’s a very nice feeling. This is a good place with good people, and I am very happy to be here,” he added.

“For me, it is a dream come true. I have always wanted to prove myself in this team and to play a part in bringing some trophies to the club.”

MOKWANA SPENT THE PREVIOUS SEASON ON LOAN WITH AL HAZEM

Before returning to the PSL, Mokwana left the local shores back in 2024 to join Esperance from Sekhukhune. The former Platinum City Rovers star had a promising start to his spell in North Africa, featuring in 25 appearances across all competitions, scoring three goals and chipping in with two assists. He helped Esperance secure the league title and cup double in the 2024/25 season.

However, Mokwana fell out of favour at Espérance, prompting the Tunisian giants to send him out on loan to Saudi Pro League side Al Hazem SC last season. Following the conclusion of his spell in the Middle East, Espérance opted against retaining his services, paving the way for the dynamic winger to depart as a free agent and choose his next destination.

Meanwhile, his return to the PSL sees him eager to make an immediate impact at Chiefs and help the club regain its glory days under head coach Fernando Da Cruz.
