Cape Town City pounce on discarded Sundowns defender

Cape Town City FC have pounced on former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Sifiso Ngobeni ahead of the new Motsepe Foundation Championship season.

Ngobeni is joining Cape Town City on a free transfer after parting ways with Sundowns at the end of the previous campaign.

The talented left-back left the Tshwane giants after struggling to break into the star-studded matchday squad. Ngobeni arrived at Masandawana in 2021 from the now-defunct Bloemfontein Celtic as one of the most promising defenders in the country.

He struggled to live up to expectations at Sundowns, prompting the team to send him out on a couple of loan spells to get regular game-time.

Ngobeni was sent out on loan to SuperSport United in the 2021/22 season, where he played only 11 matches across all competitions.

After the end of his loan with Matsatsantsa, Ngobeni returned to his parent club to fight for his place. However, his situation did not improve after receiving limited playing time.

In the past two seasons, the wing-back played for KZN side AmaZulu FC. At Usuthu, Ngobeni also failed to play regularly as Riaan Hanamub made the left-back position his own.

Sundowns eventually decided to cut ties with Ngobeni as they have a handful of options in the left-back position. Downs have Asekho Tiwani, Aubrey Modiba, Terrence Mashego, Devine Lunga, and recently added Fawaaz Basadien from Stellenbosch FC.

With the 2025/26 NFD season starting in the coming weeks, Ngobeni has penned a deal with the Citizens. The John Comitis-owned team was relegated to the Championship after losing the PSL playoffs. Orbit College beat Cape Town City and Casric Stars in the playoffs to book a spot in the Betway Premiership.

“We are delighted to announce the signing of defender, Sifiso Ngobeni,” said CT City in a brief statement on Thursday. “Born in Mamelodi. Built for The City. Welcome to the City family, Sifiso Ngobeni.”

Meanwhile, CT City are expected to make more signings to push for automatic promotion back to the SAโ€™s top-flight.
