Ellis explains Sundowns star’s snub from AWCON squad

Banyana Banyana mentor Desiree Ellis shed more light on why Mamelodi Sundowns red-hot striker Andisiwe Mgcoyi was excluded from the squad that will represent the nation in Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco in July.

Despite the 34-year-old being in excellent form for Masandawana this season in the Hollywoodbets Super League, being the top goal scorer in the league with more than 10 goals in 10 matches, she didn’t even make it to the 33 preliminary member squad.

Mgcoyi’s snub came as a surprise. However Ellis reveals that the striker’s style of play may not suit their game plan.

“There’s a lot of players that could have been in the squad not just here, many many players, but its about the way we want to play and how we want to play,” Ellis told the media.

“We need to select players that we think will do the job for us. That’s what we have done, there are many good players that could have been part of the squad and are not here.”

On a bright note, six Sundowns players we selected for the final Banyana squad; Andile Dlamini, Karabo Dhlamini, Bambanani Mbane, Thalea Smidt and Melinda Kgadiete. Tiisetso Makhubela was listed on standby.
