Chippa stalwart Pfumbidzai could leave on free transfer
Versatile Chippa United defender Ronald Pfumbidzai could leave the Eastern Cape side for free in June.
Indications are that three DStv Premiership clubs have made enquiries about the defender’s availability, with his contract set to expire in June.
Having entered the last six months of his contract with the Chilli Boys, the Zimbabwe international is free to sign a pre-contract.
JOINED CHIPPA UNITED LAST YEAR
Pfumbidzai joined Chippa in January last year after spending three seasons at Bloemfontein Celtic.
The 28-year-old has been a vital cog in the Chippa defence, playing 12 games so far this season.
Six of those starts were as a centre-back, away from his usual left-back position. He has weighed in with three goals and one assist.
In October, the Warriors defender scored a late winner for Chippa in their 2-1 win over Kaizer Chiefs at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
“He’s done exceptionally well since joining the club and has since attracted the interest of three other clubs.
“It’s not clear at this point whether Chippa are renewing his contract,” a source told FARPost.
Before the Harare-born star moved to the PSL in 2017, he had a stint in Denmark with IK Hobro.
STOOD OUT AS A LEADER
In a youthful Chippa squad, Pfumbidzai has stood out as a leader that coach Morgan Mammila can depend on.
The Chilli Boys, who have been in fine form under Mammila, are in sixth place after 14 games.
They have amassed 19 points after five wins, four draws and five defeats.
The Gqeberha outfit started the season under Daine Klate before the former Orlando Pirates mentor was axed to make way for Mammila’s switch from administration to coaching.
The former Baroka CEO, Mammila, has set a target of finishing in the top eight this season.
