PSL unveil top performers: Player & Coach of the Month

The PSL have announced its top performers for April, revealing the DStv Premiership Player of the Month and Coach of the Month.

After a month of exciting matches and impressive individual displays, the league recognises the standout footballer and coach who have left their mark.

On Wednesday, the PSL confirmed that Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena won the Coach of the Month award, while Sinoxolo Kwayiba of Chippa United won the Player of the Month accolade.

Chippa United striker Kwayiba has been on fire, scoring a remarkable four goals in four consecutive matches. He’s been a constant threat in front of goal, netting against Cape Town Spurs, Kaizer Chiefs, and SuperSport United, all games that Chippa went on to win. Even in their 2-1 defeat to AmaZulu FC, Kwayiba managed to find the back of the net.

This impressive run has significantly boosted Chippa’s fight against relegation, and the talented forward, who joined the club at the start of the 2023/24 season, is proving to be a valuable asset.

PSL STATEMENT ON THE MONTHLY AWARDS WINNERS

“The judging panel, made up of football commentators, analysts and journalists, were impressed by how he has adapted to an attacking position from defence since his arrival at the club from Pretoria Callies in the Motsepe Foundation Championship. His form in April saw the 25-year-old selected as the first player from Chippa united to win the monthly individual awards since the Gqeberha-based side was promoted to topflight football back in 2014,” read the PSL statement.

“Kwayiba emerged as the winner from a strong shortlist that also included lqraam Rayners of  Stellenbosch FC and the Orlando Pirates duo Tshegofatso Mabasa and Patrick Maswanganyi.”

RULANI MOKWENA WINS COACH OF THE MONTH

Meanwhile, Bafana Ba Style mentor Mokwena was announced as the DStv Premiership Coach of the Month for the second time this campaign, having won it back in August 2023.

The 37-year-old coach recently won the DStv Premiership title with Sundowns when they humiliated Kaizer Chiefs 5-1 at the FNB Stadium last Thursday.

In April, Sundowns registered victories against Richards Bay [1-0], Cape Town Spurs [1-0], Sekhukhune United [2-1], TS Galaxy [3-0] and held to a 2-2 draw away at Moroka Swallows.

“Mokwena was praised for maintaining his side’s winning consistency and remarkable continued unbeaten run in the league during the period of fixtures while still locked to their commitments in the CAF Champions League,” added the PSL statement.

“Mokwena received the most votes ahead of Orlando Pirates coach Jose Rivieiro, Steve Barker of Stellenbosch FC and Chippa United co-coaches Kwanele Kopo and Thabo September, from
the panel of experts during the judging process.

“A Sekhukhune United player has won an individual monthly prize for the second month in succession as teenager Asekho Tiwani, beat the likes of Sedywn George and Tebogo Mokoena to the DStv Premiership Goal of the Month for April. His maiden goal in the league in his side’s 1-0 win over Cape Town Spurs impressed the judging panel the most.

“The left-back unleashed a spectacular strike from the halfway line that caught the Cape Town Spurs defence and goalkeeper off guard. For their recognition, all the winning coaches and players will each receive a trophy and R7,000 courtesy of league sponsors, DStv.”
