Cavin Johnson demands action: ‘Referees must be held accountable too’

Kaizer Chiefs interim head coach Cavin Johnson has suggested that the only way to improve the poor standards of match officiating in SA is by asking referees to explain some of their decisions.

Johnson’s comments come after yet another questionable match officiating during their DStv Premiership match against TS Galaxy in Polokwane on Tuesday night.

Amakhosi were held to a 2-2 draw by the Rockets at Peter Mokaba Stadium. The Chiefs bench spent most of the time on the edge of their seats due to the decisions by referee Cedrick Muvhali and his assistants.

The Soweto giants finished the match with 10-man after the captain for the day, Edmilson Dove, was given his marching orders following two yellow cards in the first half.  Reserve goalkeeper Brandon Petersen was also sent off towards the end of the match for confronting Muvhali.

The overall performance of Muvhali and his assistants raised concerns with some questionable calls.

“I think we need to take the officiating to another level whereby we actually show and ask them [referees] to explain why [they made certain decisions] and maybe take them to another level,” said Johnson.

“It’s very difficult to understand; it’s very difficult to have the feeling because he is also human like us.”

The Galaxy game saw Chiefs finish the game with 10-man for the second time in a row as Given Msimango was also sent off in the club’s 5-1 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns in the league most recently.

KAIZER CHIEFS COACH ADMITS RESULTS WON’T CHANGE DESPITE POOR DECISIONS BY THE MAN IN THE MIDDLE

“I think what needs to be done is we need to show a lot more. Like we show our players where they went wrong in the game. Where they have gone right in the game, and we try to improve that.”

“It’s very difficult sometimes to criticise someone afterwards. It’s like a football match where we always criticise the coaches or assistant coaches or the medical team or players. That’s easy to do.

“That’s why I always say it’s very difficult to criticise someone after the game. We can phone anybody, it’s still 2-2, it will not change to 3-2 for Kaizer Chiefs.”
