‘I am the envy of most coaches’: – Larsen after Magesi’s promotion

Magesi FC coach Clinton Larsen has explained why he believes most coaches in both the Motsepe Foundation Championship and the DStv Premiership envy his job.

Larsen, on Sunday, guided Magesi to promotion to the elite league with two matches to play.

It was his first full season in charge at the club, having joined in the middle of last season. Speaking to journalists at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday, the 53-year-old commended the club hierarchy for giving him space to do his job without interference.

WHY CLINTON LARSEN BELIEVES HE IS THE ENVY OF FELLOW COACHES

“I just said in my post-match interview that I  must be the envy of a lot of coaches because in the 15 months I have been at the club, there has never been a single day of interference,” he said.

“That can’t be said for many teams in the NFD and even in the PSL. So I want to thank Solly Makhubela and John Mathibe, our CEO for that diligent leadership. It’s quiet but firm, diligent leadership at the top and that’s allowed us to get on with our work.”

WHERE DOES THE MAGESI FC PROMOTION TO THE DSTV PREMIERSHIP RANK FOR THEIR HEAD COACH?

Larsen, who won the Telkom Knockout with Bloemfontein Celtic in 2012, says the promotion with Magesi ranks higher than any achievement as a coach.

“It ranks at the top. I won the Telkom Cup with Bloemfontein Celtic. We have won promotion now, so this is gonna be the ‘I am there with that’. So I am very proud of this achievement,” he said.

“Like I said, people don’t know how hard we had to work to get the club to where it is now. People just think, okay, you sign a few players, and you start to win some games.

“There is so much more that goes on behind the scenes. So again, I can’t be thankful enough to the management for allowing me to put this team together the way it is and trusting me,” explained an emotional Larsen.

“My methods can be a little bit different to others, but I am who I am, and they have trusted me to coach my way and deal with my players my way.

“I said from day one, it’s not about me. I have been in the PSL; I am not obsessed with being in the PSL. But this is a life-changing moment for the club and, more particularly, for my players. Some of them really deserve to play at the top level; they are good enough.”
