10-man Chiefs beat Richards Bay in fiery contest at Moses Mabhida

10-man Kaizer Chiefs got the better of Richards Bay 1-0 when both sides faced off in a sold-out DStv Premiership clash at Moses Mabhida on Saturday night.

Despite playing with an extra man for over 45 minutes, the KwaZulu-Natal side failed to make use of their numerical advantage.

Amakhosi put on a superb defensive show of class to force a win after a disappointing 4-0 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns last week.

In an end-to-end first half, Natal Rich Boyz kicked off the game on the front foot as they pushed forward in numbers searching for an opener, but luck was never on their side.

However, the Soweto giants upped the ante from there on, but were guilty of wasteful finishing as they failed to break the deadlock despite several half chances.

In the 31st minute, Chiefs were reduced to 10 men after Yusuf Maart was red-carded for a professional foul on the last man.

The game went into the half-time break with nothing to separate the two teams.

In the second half, the visitors tried to be the better side, but the Glamour Boys stood their ground.

Arthur Zwane’s troops restored parity in the 62nd minute through a penalty after Kgaogelo Sekgota was fouled in the box.

Dillan Solomons stepped up and clinically executed the penalty, sending Salim Magoola the opposite way to put Chiefs in front.

Amakhosi continued put in a resilient defending performance in the last remaining 28 minutes of the second stanza to rebuff the efforts of the visitors’ attackers to claim all the valuable three points.

In other matches, Cape Town City were held to a 1-all draw by Stellenbosch in the Cape Town derby at DHL Stadium.

Meanwhile, Maritzburg United defeated Chippa United with a 2-1 scoreline at home to climb up the table.
