Steve Barker explains turnaround in Stellenbosch FC form

Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker has given this thoughts on his side’s recent good run of form in the DStv Premiership.

Steve Barker insists that Stellenbosch FC’s decent form of late, the positive turnaround in the league, is by no fluke.

After going nine games with no win in all competitions, Barker’s troops have now gone five matches unbeaten.

This includes four straight wins and a 1-1 draw against reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns on Sunday.

Stellies beat Cape Town City, Chippa United, Swallows and Richards Bay before their draw against Masandawana.

WHAT HAS WORKED FOR STELLENBOSCH RECENTLY

Barker has outlined some of the contributing factors to the sudden change of fortunes at the Western Cape club.

“To get four wins and a draw is a massive turnaround for us. There are a lot of factors. I think one was just to believe in our process,” he told journalists.

“We are a club that trusts in what we do, sometimes it doesn’t always happen immediately but if you really analysed and watched our matches.

“The Chippa game, Sekhukhune, and Marumo Gallants’ games, it was not like we were outplayed. We were in those games and maybe sometimes conceded sloppy goals.

CENTRE BACK SITUATION A RELIEF FOR STEVE BARKER

“We also had a crisis at centre back with a lot of injuries, so we had to change a lot of our centre backs pairing. Now we have a little bit of continuity on that centre back pairing which I think has also helped,” he said.

“But It’s just a belief in what we do and trust in what we do. Just keep working hard every day and we will get the reward.”

Stellies have also jumped to 10th on the DStv Premiership log with 27 points. They are tied on points with ninth-placed TS Galaxy and only a point below AmaZulu, who are number eight.

Their next league match will be at home against AmaZulu on 17 March.
