Cape Town City came from a goal down to beat Maritzburg United 2-1 in a DStv Premiership encounter on Saturday evening.
Maritzburg welcomed Cape Town City at the Harry Gwala Stadium, looking to boost their chances of moving out of the relegation zone.
The KZN-based side had a lively start in the opening minutes of the game, but they were let down by indecisiveness in the final third.
Cape Town City started stringing some good passes in the Maritzburg half and nearly opened the scoring through Khanyisa Mayo but his shot was well off the target.
Eric Tinkler’s troops, CT City, once again came close to breaking the deadlock in the 21st minute after Mayo played a pinpoint cross to Taahir Goedeman, but his diving header went off the crossbar.
The referee blew halftime whistle with with both sides deadlocked at the 0-0.
The Cape Town-based had a flying start to the second half and nearly found the first goal of the match, but Maritzburg’s defence remained resolute.
The Team of Choice opened the scoring in the 53rd minute through Bradley Cross after receiving a well-worked low pass from Karim Kimvuidi.
The Citizens brought on Mduduzi Mdantsane in place of Goedeman in the 60th minute as they were looking to find an equaliser.
Cape Town City found an opener
Mdantsane quickly stamped his authority as he was picked out by Taariq Fielies in the box to score an easy tap-in just after the 60th minute mark.
Eric Tinker’s side found the second goal of the match to make it 2-1 through Mayo, who pounced on Mdantsane’s loose ball in the 68th minute.
Mayo’s goal sealed all three points for CT City, who claimed their third successive victory in the league to move into fifth place on the log with 32 points after 22 games. On the other hand, Maritzburg suffered their third defeat in a row and remain in 15th spot.
Meanwhile, Royal AM brushed aside Sekhukhune United with a 2-0 win at Chatsworth Stadium.
