Steve Barker gives update on Thamsanqa Gabuza transfer links

Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker has given an update on striker Thamsanqa Gabuza’s transfer links to the Winelands club.

The 35-year-old frontman has been heavily linked with a move to Stellenbosch FC as his contract with SuperSport United is set to come to an end when the season finishes.

Speaking during the Cape derby press conference, Barker confirmed that his side are locked in talks with the Tshwane-based outfit for the services of the ex-Orlando Pirates forward .

Before news of these talks emerged, the player was also linked with a move to the KwaZulu-Natal side, Royal AM.

STEVE BARKER GIVES UPDATE ON THAMSANQA GABUZA TO STELLENBOSCH FC

“I’m hoping that before the transfer window is out, there is a possibility, but right now, it has not been finalised on Gabuza,” Barker told the media.

“I’m hoping that by the end of work today [Tuesday], we will have a decision.”

Gabuza has been with SuperSport for four seasons, having joined them from the Buccaneers.

He managed to play 106 games across all competitions and scored 22 goals in the process.

The Stellenbosch FC coach also touched on the possibility of bringing back goalscorer Iqraam Rayners to the club, but he described the situation as “a bit of speculation”.

STEVE BARKER ON IQRAAM RAYNERS POSSIBLE RETURN

“On the other player [Iqraam Rayners], it’s also just a bit of speculation right now. He is a player that was dear to us and our top goalscorer,” he added.

“He helped to get us promoted, and he would add a massive value to the club.

“But right now, he is still a SuperSport United player.”

Rayners left the Winelands-based side in 2020 to join Matsatsantsa, where he has played 58 games and found the back of the net on five occasions.
