Onyekachi Okonkwo sees massive potential in Jose Riveiro’s Orlando Pirates

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Onyekachi Okonkwo believes Jose Riveiro is in possession of a squad that is strong enough to halt Mamelodi Sundowns’ dominance if the club leadership exercises patience.

Okonkwo is one of the most celebrated Nigerians that graced the DStv Premiership.

The retired footballer is convinced the Soweto giants are not far behind in terms of quality from the league’s pacesetters and that current crop of players has massive potential to end the club’s league title drought.

“Of course, I still follow Pirates. I am still in contact with Irvin Khoza and a few of the management staff,” he told FARPost.

“I watch their matches online whenever I am opportune, and I was very excited when the Pirates won the MTN 8 this season.

The retired Nigerian footballer picks Vincent Pule and his countryman, Olisa Ndah, as his best performers in the current squad.

“The current squad is full of talent, especially Vincent Pule and my countryman Olisa Ndah,” he said.

“These two players are extremely talented and can carry the team to success.

“As for Ndah, I am so proud of him because not many Nigerians succeed in South Africa, let alone at a great club like Pirates. I am super proud of him.

Okonkwo’s remarks came as Orlando Pirates are smarting from a convincing 4-1 win over Stellenbosch FC on Sunday at Orlando Stadium.

They completed back-to-back wins having also outsmarted Golden Arrows 3-1 in the previous weekend.

The MTN8 winners have been decent so far having won seven games in 17 matches. They drew four times and lost on six occasions, with 25 points on their tally.

What has left the Pirates supporters buzzing ahead of the next match is how the Soweto giants have rediscovered their scoring formula after bagging seven goals in two matches.
