Sundowns only SA team in Africa Super League – report

Reigning DStv Premiership Champions Mamelodi Sundowns are set to be the only club that will participate in the inaugural Africa Super League. This is according to a report by MTN FC.

The Africa Super League was officially launched by CAF last year. But Africa’s football motherbody did not reveal much regarding tournament details.

CAF announced that 24 clubs from 16 countries would take part. A $100-million prize-money with $11.6-million for the winner was also revealed.

But the latest reports suggests that the number of teams has been reduced to only eight.

The teams are reportedly Petro Atletico [Angola], TP Mazembe Democratic Republic of Congo, Al Ahly [Egypt], Horoya [Guinea], Wydad Casablanca [Morocco], Simba [Tanzania], Esperance of Tunisia and Mamelodi Sundowns. The competition is set to get underway in August this year.

There was also a solidarity fund that will see each of the 54 member associations of CAF receive $1-million per year. The money is aimed towards football development. The structure of the league is also due to change due to the number of teams. Each club is reportedly going to be playing each other home and away over the season for a total of 14 matches.

The winner will secure one of the four CAF spots at the expanded Club World Cup.

FIFA CLUB WORLD CUP AMENDMENTS

Meanwhile, the first edition of the expanded club World Cup will take place from June-July 2025. It has resulted in the following allocation in terms of continental federations, Asia 4, CAF: 4, Concacaf: 4, CONMEBOL: 6, OFC: 1, UEFA: 12 and tournament host: 1.

Saudi Arabia will host the next club World Cup. It is set to be played under the current format of seven teams. The tournament will take place 12 to 22 December 2023.
