Swallows sign Orlando Pirates defender on loan

PSL strugglers Swallows have announced the signing of Orlando Pirates defender Bongani Sam

Sam joins the Dube Birds on a loan deal until the end of the season. The former Bloemfontein Celtic and Highlands Park player has struggled to cement his place since joining Pirates in 2019.

He was sent to Maritzburg United on a season-long loan deal at the beginning of the current season. But after playing just nine matches the player parted ways with the Team of Choice to return to his parent club.

ANOTHER CHANCE TO IMPRESS FOR ORLANDO PIRATES DEFENDER

He becomes the second player to be loaned out by the Buccaneers on the last day of the January transfer window. Striker Zakhele Lepasa has also left to join SuperSport United on loan until the end of the season.

Sam would be a much needed boost of a Swallows side that has struggled this season.

SWALLOWS BAN BOOST

The club has been thrown a lifeline after sorting out their FIFA transfer ban. This has enabled them to beef up their squad on their quest to improve their league position.

Free agent and former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has also reportedly signed for the club. Akpeyi had been without a club since parting with Chiefs at the end of last season.

He was strongly linked with a move to Sekhukhune but negotiations collapsed. Another player that the club managed to register was former SuperSport United striker Evans Rusike. The 31-year-old had been training with the club since being released by Sekhukhune United at the end of last season. But they were unable to register him due to the ban.

Swallows are back in DStv Premiership action this coming Friday when they host Richards Bay at Dobsonville Stadium.

They are currently second from bottom, three points above Marumo Gallants, who are bottom of the log.
