Why Bongani Sam won’t face Orlando Pirates
On loan Swallows FC player Bongani Sam is a notable absentee as they host his mother club, Orlando Pirates.
The two sides meet in the DStv Premiership, and here is why Sam will have to sit it out.
Sam began his journey at Swallows after he completed a move to the club on loan from Pirates. Since then, the 25-year-old only made one appearance for the Dube Birds.
The Bucs star debuted for Swallows away to Cape Town City in a 2-0 loss for the Soweto side.
However, his debut for the Dube Birds did not go well. After 17 minutes on the pitch, he got a red card at the stroke of full time.
Because of this, Sam will miss the opportunity to impress his mother club’s head coach, Jose Riviero, against his new side, Swallows.
SAM’S LOAN MOVES THIS SEASON
Sam’s loan move to Swallows is not his first this season. At the beginning of the season, Pirates sent the 25-year-old on loan to Maritzburg United to polish his skills.
The hope was that he would get more game time, as he did not get a lot of minutes for Pirates last season.
Sam only played nine games for United under his former mentor from Bloemfontein Celtic, John Maduka.
However, when Maduka got sacked last in November, Sam’s journey at United did not last long. The 25-year-old later found a new home at Swallow. The current loan spell is set to end at the close of the season.
Sam is set to come back from his suspension in Swallow’s next game against Lamontville Golden Arrows on 17 March.
The former Celtic defender will look to make his way back on the pitch and start on a clean slate with Swallows.
Swallows are currently on 24 points in the league and will aim to get a minimum of six points in the remaining nine games to avoid relegation.
